Elliott came to the
Cape in 1900. Although he was not a professional photographer, he became
interested in photographing his surroundings. Elliott's collection (now owned
by the State) provides an invaluable record of the Cape in the early 20th
century. Taken mainly in the winter months, his architectural photographs are
unrivalled.

was the method employed by the Governor to communicate with his subjects in the
Cape Colony. As a consequence it carried all the important laws, proclamations,
government notices and government advertisements. Private individuals and
concerns could also place advertisments, notices of property sales, births and
deaths, etc. The Government Gazette reflects the daily business of the Colony
and its citizens. A magnificent research source.

in Holland in 1950. It is thought that they were taken back to Holland by
Governor van de Graaff in 1791. He had a keen interest in cartography. The maps
